Kindt And Sanders Bring Back Marvel’s Contest Of Champions Concept For Infinity
This September, Matt Kindt and Steven Sanders will team up for a new Marvel miniseries called Infinity: The Hunt. The miniseries will bring back Marvel’s classic “Contest of Champions” concept in which the superheroes are players in a massive fight to the death.
Infinity: The Hunt will see Thanos arrive on Earth and demand that a series of contests are fought between the students in the Marvel Universe. Genesis, Quentin Quire, and 15 new characters created by Kindt will take part in the contest. Hank Pym, Wolverine and She-Hulk will oversee the contest, the latter two being experienced in previous Contest of Champions events. The original Contest of Champions was released in 1982 as Marvel’s first limited series. Grandmaster, the Elder of the Universe, challenged Death to the game, with the life of his fellow Elder, the Collector, at stake.
The Eisner Award-nominated Kindt wouldn’t reveal many details about Infinity, but he teased that his 15 brand-new characters will be from schools around the world, including Wakanda, Latveria and Atlantis.
“And the heart of the story is these new characters mixing with some of the students from the existing schools, like Jean Grey’s,” said Kindt to CBR. “That’s really what attracted me to the project. Working with the characters that we’re all familiar with like Wolverine and She-Hulk, but also getting to create whole new characters.”
Not much more is known about Infinity: The Hunt, including what that mysterious title means. Does it hint at the contest within the story? Avengers Arena is already doing things Hunger Games-style, so will Infinity play out more like The Running Man? (And yes, there is a difference.) We shall see.
Infinity: The Hunt by Matt Kindt and Steven Sanders will debut in September.
